Congrats to A New Martial Arts Master Instructor

A New Master Instructor!

Congrats to Master Instructor Franklin Fick!

Sensei Case

I am submitting this win for the Master Instructor Course in the hope
that you deem it enough to award a certificate.

The first time I saw this course was probably more then 10 years ago,
and I read through it and thought it was very well thought out,
presented clearly, and made a lot of sense. At the time, I incorporated
some of the things presented into teaching my students (teaching chinese
systems). Some of the things in the course were the things that I found
familiar.

But a lot of the things in the course – either elaborated or broke
things down into their logical foundational pieces —   and this was a
tremendous help. In other words – you presented the material in a way —
matrix-ed it, so that it covered everything. Which was more then I was
taught before.

Not directly related to the Master Instructor Course – but more to
related to the whole spectrum of courses you have –  I don’t think I was
aware of how much your courses helped me – until I re-read and went over
a lot of your courses recently, after not picking them up for about 10
years. Actually some of the concepts and the way you had put things
together – are much clearer now with another 10 years experience under
my belt..  (about 30 years experience now more or less – I would have to
do the math to be exact..   but I can see and appreciate the logic of
the way you look at the arts a bit more now then I could 10 years
ago…  ) – almost like now I can see how everything is fitting
together, how you have laid everything out..  it really is quite brilliant.

Back to the Master Instructor Course – re-reading and going over the
course again now – there were several times I was thinking – “Oh, that’s
were I got that from…”

That’s kind of the impetus – behind me seeking a certification now – I
would like to be able to give you credit for the tremendous influence
you have had on me.

Re-reading this course and your other courses, I have come to realize
that matrixing – being exposed to it, has changed the way I look at
everything, not just the martial arts. But just everything really. I
find myself breaking everything down into the fundamental pieces,
disregarding the fluff, getting to the core of things, the basics, to
try to understand them. (see what they are, what part of the picture
they cover, what is missing..  lol)

So far I have found your analysis of things to be impeccably thorough –
to the point where I do not think I could add to it without  taking away
from it or modify it in a manner that would add anything of value to it.
What you present – is really good!

it was also very good to be reminded again of rule number 3- the ideal
instructor is defined as “one who gets others to finish what they start”

I need to do more of that —  coming from many years in hard core
Chinese martial arts now (even though I started in Japanese arts as a
teenager – karate and aikido)– this is something that is neglected. The
instructor doesn’t take any responsibility for the student getting it,
that is all laid upon the student..  this is probably why there has been
such a decline in the Chinese martial arts over the years…

hopefully I will be able to work on that (rule number 3) and have some
success in achieving it…

Thank you for your work, it is truly appreciated.

Franklin

Thank you, Master Instructor Fick. Thank you for that great win.

And for everybody, the secret of the martial arts is not some mystical boo bah out there, it is just being able to see what is simple and works. It is sticking to basics, and understanding them, and practicing them religiously.

The problem is that everybody thinks they understand the basics. They don’t. I haven’t had one single person tell me that they knew and understood the material on the Master Instructor Course since I put it out many years ago.

So thank you, Master Instructor Fick. And thank you for sharing your win with the martial arts.

Have a great work out!

Al

Incidentally, I matrixed politics recently. The book is here…

It will help anybody understand why the governments do what they do, and why we are currently undergoing anarchy in the US. It’s not for everybody. Personally, I’d rather practice martial arts. But it is an interesting look at matrixing.

Brutality the Martial Arts Way

Monkey Boxing Workability

Here’s one of the Monkey Boxing newsletters,
there’s a video clip link half way down.
Enjoy…

More vids up.

The thing one has to remember
is that the martial arts are founded on workability.
Not how pretty you look.
Not how many forms you can sail through.
Rather…
how quickly and efficiently
you can take somebody out.

I remember doing Kenpo forms,
back in the 1960s,
and it was how graceful we could make the form look.
Then classical karate in the 1970s,
and how powerful we could look.
But it wasn’t ‘looks’ that were important.
It wasn’t looking graceful,
or looking powerful.

As time went on I kept trying to find
the shortest distance,
the least effort.

I needed to take people out before they took me out,
I needed to do it effortlessly.

I always remember telling a class
about fighting ten people.

If you fight ten people,
are you going to fight ten times as hard?
You’re going to run out of energy real quick.
No,
the solution is to fight one tenth as hard.

Hence,
I started working on effortless takedowns.

Mind you,
I had very violent and efficient takedowns from Karate.
I had amazing technical data on takedowns from Aikido.
So I was blending.
How do I put the technical into the violent?

If you look at the Head Catcher vid,
Monkey Boxing Video 37,
you will see a vast economy.
And,
you will see an efficiency in the grab.

There is nothing wrong with a rear choke,
hands locked,
forearm under the chin,
like they do on TV.
But,
remember,
these are pros,
and do you want to go to the street
and struggle looking for that perfect choke?

When I do it in the vid,
I just grab the whole body by the head,
and I tweak.

This is much more efficient.
You can look for the beautiful choke later,
nothing wrong with it.
But for Jihad’s sake,
close the distance,
grab the whole body,
and…CRACK!

Fast as you can.

What I run into,
the problem with teaching this technique,
is that you have to warn students,
drill students,
to be gentle,
it is that strong.

AND,
students are afraid to grab other students
in so impolite a manner.

It is that political correctness thing,
you know.
People have been trained to respect others.
You actually have to overcome that bull stuff,
that ‘be nice’ crap
that parents and teachers hand out.

So I grab a student,
throw him half to the floor,
let him feel the total loss of his body,
how helpless he is…
I tell him that his body is now mine…
then I lay him out.
Gentle.
I just grab him like a gorilla,
and lay him down like a baby.

And if he doesn’t grab his partner like a gorilla,
then I show him how again and again.

‘Your partner is here to learn
how to fight
how to survive,
and if you don’t show him the truth of brutality
you are cheating him.’

GRRR
I grab him like a gorilla,
spin him down so he knows I could slap him on the floor
like a fly on a windshield…
than I lay him down gentle.

Again and again,
until he does it.

No more political correctness.
Instead…
brutality with a gentle ending,
until the student understands.

Survival doesn’t come with a pillow.
And neither does effortlessness.

Anyway,
I hope I have ranted and raved enough.
Be gentle with those guys,
but make sure they know what reality is.

Enjoy the vids.
We’re starting to get into
the real stuff now,
the basics are pretty much laid out,
make sure you practice them enough
so you can absorb the real meat.

Good afternoon!
Good weekend,
and great work out.

Just released a new Martial Arts book.
But,
it is not for everyone.

I recently read a book which claimed that
martial artists are dying young.
It was a very well researched book.
Went over the history of the martial arts,
traced the ages of death
and pretty much proved that
the martial arts are bad for your health.

Well, I can’t have that.
Even if it’s true its a lie.
So I wrote a book
proving that the truth was really a lie,
and that martial artists can live a long life.
If,
of course,
they do certain things.
So this book is about those certain things.

And,
it is not for everybody.
It is not a book of technique nor form.
It is not a training manual.
It is a serious discussion
as to what is wrong with the martial arts
that makes martial artists die young.
And there are recommendations
and data concerning things like energy (chi),
how you’re supposed to use the body,
and so on.

So it’s a brainy book.
Strictly for those who like to read and understand.
but it could have fantastic consequences
for those who want to understand
the principles behind adjusting your body
so it works properly.

So it might be for you,
but it might not.

And,
here’s some other news concerning it.
It is a kindle book, which means you download it and read it
on your kindle or iphone or whatever.

Now,
I am planning to write a few books strictly for Kindle.
The Kindle format is unfriendly to pictures,
so there won’t be tons of illustrations,
just a few.
And,
the books are usually about half as long as a regular book.
That is just the kindle format and problems.

But,
it is a huge market for me,
so I have to gear a few books over to it.

Incidentally,
the most well reviewed book I’ve got
is Outlaw Karate.

Five Five star ratings.
Nothing under five stars.

I recommend the paper version
because the kindle version comes in two parts
and isn’t always easy to read.

So that’s about it,
I’ll have some great wins for you next time,
things are changing,
and one of these days
I’ll have Monkeyland open again.

Have a great work out!
