People Don’t Understand What the Martial Arts Really Are…

A way of fighting? Yes, but no.
A form of exercise? Yes but no.
And the answers come and go.
Here’s the truth:
the martial arts are a tool.
They are a tool for discovering oneself.
This totally destroys the idea that one art is better or worse than another.

We used to go to my instructor,
Bob,
and ask him which art was best.
He would say:
‘There are many roads to the top of the mountain.’

Or we would ask him which technique was best.
He would say:
‘They’re both good.’
But that didn’t answer our question!…we thought.
It was the right answer,
but we were too shallow to understand it.
No art is better than any other art…
they are different tools for plumbing the depths of a man.
No technique is better than another,
they are just different ways of finding out what works for the individual.
Different techniques work for different individuals,
so how could one be better?
You have to understand all the techniques
so you have the right tools
to teach everybody
according to how they need to be taught.

So I teach a dozen different arts.
I have to,
because an aikido technique might be perfect for one guy,
but another guy might need that technique translated into kung fu,
and for another guy that technique won’t work until he’s seen the karate variation.
And so on.

Which is better?
Depends on what you’re doing.
Who is better?
that’s the question of an immature person,
a person who isn’t even a real black belt.
Here’s an article on what a real black belt is.

And here is a link to Tai Chi.

I didn’t understand karate until I studied Tai Chi.
I understood Tai Chi instantly because I had studied karate.
So what tool is best for you?
What art?
Go ahead,
choose one,
study it until you are numb and enlightened and thoroughly educated,
but don’t think you understand it
until you have studied some other art,
or two.
Or three or four.
That’s just the way it is.
A guy who teaches ballet doesn’t understand hip hop
A guy who teaches hip hop won’t understand ballet,
and vice versa.
But once one has a few dance styles under his belt
he will understand dancing.
Have a great work out!
Al
