Martial Arts Stances and Perfection!

Perfect Stances in Karate

Good Karate stances depend on several things.

One, you have to analyze the angle of the foot for best traction.

Two, you have to analyze the leg for max efficiency

when it comes to the push, or launch.

Three, the best method for finding the best stance

is to have somebody push on your stance,

from the block or fist down to the ground.

Four, analyze the body from the viewpoint

of geometric shapes.

Tan Tien and shoulders for the upper body,

tan tien and feet for the lower body.

All angles should be tested for resistance while relaxed.

Five, low stances are great for training,

they make the legs strong and efficient,

but when fighting one should choose a stance

that is both mobile and solid.

Sixth, it was Gigo Funakoshi who introduced

low stances and high kicks. Before then stances were higher.

Seventh, there are two points of efficiency,

how effective is the launch of the body,

how effective is the grounding of the body.

Eighth, the hips must be aligned with the legs and ground.

Ninth, stances are different between styles

due to whim, for the most part.

To do something because ‘the masters say’ is foolish.

Tenth, stances, motions, must be done with an eye to physics.

Eleventh, the purpose of the stances are to better launch or ground.

Stances must be analyzed according to the situation,

and adjusted to directions to be moved in.

Twelfth, bouncing is bad strategy.

Good strategy is to analyze the potentials of grounding v launching.

And so on.

Seems like a lot,

but once you understand these types of things

everything becomes easy.

Thanks to Kumar for the question.

I actually show most of this stuff in the Master’s Handbook.

The visuals really give a deep understanding

of what I exactly mean.

People Don’t Understand What the Martial Arts Really Are…

A way of fighting? Yes, but no.
A form of exercise? Yes but no.
And the answers come and go.
Here’s the truth:
the martial arts are a tool.
They are a tool for discovering oneself.
This totally destroys the idea that one art is better or worse than another.

We used to go to my instructor,
Bob,
and ask him which art was best.
He would say:
‘There are many roads to the top of the mountain.’

Or we would ask him which technique was best.
He would say:
‘They’re both good.’
But that didn’t answer our question!…we thought.
It was the right answer,
but we were too shallow to understand it.
No art is better than any other art…
they are different tools for plumbing the depths of a man.
No technique is better than another,
they are just different ways of finding out what works for the individual.
Different techniques work for different individuals,
so how could one be better?
You have to understand all the techniques
so you have the right tools
to teach everybody
according to how they need to be taught.

So I teach a dozen different arts.
I have to,
because an aikido technique might be perfect for one guy,
but another guy might need that technique translated into kung fu,
and for another guy that technique won’t work until he’s seen the karate variation.
And so on.

Which is better?
Depends on what you’re doing.
Who is better?
that’s the question of an immature person,
a person who isn’t even a real black belt.
Here’s an article on what a real black belt is.
http://monstermartialarts.com/martial-arts-articles/black-belt-you-might-not-be-one/

And here is a link to Tai Chi.
http://monstermartialarts.com/martial-arts/tai-chi-chuan-package/
I didn’t understand karate until I studied Tai Chi.
I understood Tai Chi instantly because I had studied karate.
So what tool is best for you?
What art?
Go ahead,
choose one,
study it until you are numb and enlightened and thoroughly educated,
but don’t think you understand it
until you have studied some other art,
or two.
Or three or four.
That’s just the way it is.
A guy who teaches ballet doesn’t understand hip hop
A guy who teaches hip hop won’t understand ballet,
and vice versa.
But once one has a few dance styles under his belt
he will understand dancing.
Have a great work out!
