How I Learned Kung Fu the Hard Way!

Great song by Carl Douglas, it was popular when I received my Black Belt. I’d be driving from Redwood City to San Jose for my lessons, and that song came on, and stayed in my head. It stayed in everybody’s head. The only problem was that I didn’t know any kung fu, I was studying Karate!

A few years later I was teaching Karate in Santa Rosa, and I looked out the window of my dojo and some guy (name of Alan) was doing Kung Fu. I went out and talked to him, and he ended up teaching me an art called Ton Toi. Ton Toi is a northern style of kung fu which means ‘springy legs.’ It was a series of ten techniques done in a line. There was appropriate mythology behind it. Monks in the hallways of castles, prisoners in a long, narrow prison yard. The techniques weren’t very good, but the lines were phenomenal for developing leg strength. It was a northern style of Kung Fu, and they always say, ‘Legs in the north, arms in the south.’ I practiced those lines for quite some time, got quite good at them, but there was a problem with them. As I said, the techniques weren’t too good, but being a basic sort of style Ton Toi was supposed to prepare you for the Southern Style, but Alan didn’t want to teach me the southern style.

A few years pass and I’m teaching Karate in Tujunga, Ca. A fellow walks in, he was fresh out of the big house, didn’t have a job, but he said he would teach me southern style if I would teach him Karate. Normally, I wouldn’t have, but this guy, Richard Armington, was different. He had studied the real stuff, Fut Ga (Five families style) with Arther Lee in Hawaii. I spent a lot of time learning a variety of forms, and it was great stuff. There was a problem. The techniques were sound, but they were based on a circular motion, and they weren’t as efficient as the more linear motion techniques of Karate.

A few years pass, and I develop Matrixing. Matrixing was not an instant thing, it developed in me over several decades. Anyway, I matrixed Karate, worked out like a champ, and then I started looking at my Kung Fu. The Kung Fu forms were arm swinging things that covered a lot of territory with random stepping. And the techniques could be made more efficient if I put them on a matrix, fixed up some of the blocks, and tightened the circles.

I fixed the footwork by putting them on the Nine Square pattern. This was the first time I used the Nine Square, and I was very pleased with how that pattern made forms more logical, easier to remember, and the techniques easier to apply. Also, fixing Kung Fu like I did was a very important step between karate, and the more pure fighting forms of styles such as Monkey Boxing and Nine Square Diagram Boxing.

My intention, with Kung Fu, which I call Shaolin Butterfly Kung Fu, was to apply matrixing to make a more efficient type of Shaolin Kung Fu, and to take advantage of the body building properties of kung fu, and, most of all, to make it easier for anybody to learn, and to apply.

If you’ve already done the Matrix Karate course, and you want to see first hand how to apply matrixing to other arts, Shaolin Butterfly is an excellent way to go. And if you don’t care about matrixing, but are just more interested in powerful, super smooth Kung Fu, click on the link below.

Hard Hands and a Real Martial Arts Punch!

Conditioning and Protecting Your Hands in the Martial Arts!

Thanks for asking, Kumar.

When I began the martial arts
we were hitting trees,
sticking our hands into boxes of sand,
and generally thinking we were conditioning our fists.
Actually,
we didn’t know what we were doing.

When I went to my first real school,
the Kang Duk Won,
there were two planter boxes at the head of the class.
One had sand and the other had pebbles.
We dug our spear hands into those.

Over the years I played with rug samples on tall trees,
makiwara and bags and balls
and all sorts of things.
The best conditioning device,
the one that worked for me,
was to do push ups on fingertips.
I was able to do push ups on two fingers (each hand).
The glory of that was not in the conditioning,
but in the mental focus it required.

Now,
after all that,
one would think that I would be suffering from arthritis.
Nope.
And I didn’t use dit da jow
or any secret potion.
What I did to make sure I didn’t get arthritis
was to…stay active.

I’m 76 now,
and I still practice the forms,
especially Tai Chi.
I do light work outs on striking,
and, here’s the key:
whenever I feel sore
in any part of my body,
I focus my work out on that area.
My hip hurts?
I stretch in a manner that opens the hip up.
I do stances that use that hip.
My fist hurts?
I practice focus,
snapping loose tight,
and the pain goes away.

I know other people who suffer from arthritis.
Some just aren’t active.
A lot of Jujitsu/MMA fellows
seem to suffer injuries,
arthritis and other things,
But they don’t practice forms,
or do Tai Chi,
or put awareness via work out
into an afflicted area.

Want to hear something funny?
My family all decided a certain Chiropracter/nutritionist
was the real deal.
Everybody went to see him.
My wife dragged me along.

Now,
I work out every day,
but my diet is junk.
I eat what I want.
McDonald’s, ice cream,
pizza and other fast food.
Any thing I want.

Everybody expected the doctor
to find all sorts of things wrong with me.
So he did a kind of body testing,
holding various substances,
minerals and vitamins and things,
up against my body
and tested my muscle reaction.
If my muscles were weak
that wold indicate some organ was malfunctioning.

He couldn’t find anything wrong with me.
Everything worked.
And here’s the funny thing,
my family was so sure the doctor would reveal my problems,
they got mad when he couldn’t.
They were so pissed off they stopped seeing him.
He couldn’t find anything wrong with Al,
so he was obviously a quack.

This is absolutely true,
and the real secret,
of good health,
avoiding things like arthritis
and whatever,
is this:

Don’t take anything serious.
Laugh at everything.
Ignore idiots.
Work out every day.

I especially laugh
when people try to think I’ve got problems.
After a lifetime of martial arts
I have no problems,
and that’s my secret of good health and long life.

Here’s the book I wrote on

The Punch!

You should also consider my courses on Tai Chi Chuan.

Have a great work out!

Al

Republishing the Monster Martial Arts Books!

Monster Books Published Again!

Hi guys!
I’m starting to republish my martial arts books.
It’s an arduous process,
especially in the beginning.
I’m figuring out how different publishing companies work.
Here’s the link…

Remember, the book has FIVE HOURS of video instruction!

I’ll let you know
as other books get published,
but, right now,
let me give you a win from
Stephan Hoffman…

Dear Master Case,

First up – I cannot believe it took me this long to accept the Master Training Program. I honestly thought it was there for people who were advanced enough to create their own style.

I am so happy I finally listened to you however! Every single course/book/training manual I have bought from you (and a few from other creators) suddenly makes sense!!!

CBM – where do I begin… this in conjunction with the Dan Tien Breathing (which I have heard of so often in Qigong etc) which you actually explain in simple terms, has absolutely put me in a new frame of mind. It reminded me of the Bene Gesserit Prana Bindu training from the original Dune novels. I admit to always having been envious of their incredible bodily control!

I went to the gym today and ONLY did a Yogata and Qigong flow using CBM and it was one of the hardest training sessions I think I have ever had! Not draining mind you, but definitely took a lot of concentration, and I could feel my energy starting to align correctly as I know it should in the energetic arts. This can only get better!

For me … this suddenly feels like I have the ability to finally play on an athlete level.

I have said for many years that my goal is to be … someone who not only understands how the Universal Energies operate, but is able to apply that knowledge to every aspect of their lives to create ease and Flow. To have you espouse the same idea from the Martial perspective is finally the missing piece to my puzzle!

I also am absolutely in awe of your description of Mastery. For the longest time, I have both been enamored with and hateful towards the Martial Arts. Only because the gyms and dojos are all about fighting and competing. Where I have always wanted to both Play, as well as learn energetic harmony. I enjoy combat as play but have no desire to actually hurt anyone – not even in competition. Your approach fits my ideology perfectly!

I hope to keep you updated as I progress. I cannot wait to revisit the 9sq boxing now once I have completed the Master Manuals and see how this shifts my understanding.

Oh, I even finally saw (or rather felt) how to use Matrixing in conjunction with CBM in BJJ. Which I have often wanted to know if that would even work – the answer is all in sensing/feeling the energy so that the reaction time is non-existent. I cannot WAIT to roll with my friend soon… He is a purple belt and I am only a white belt, but I just know I will have something to teach him and, in turn, have him test it out on me too!

Many thanks again Master!

Warm Regards
Stephan Hoffman
